Girly girls like to have sparkly, pink, and matching things, and it starts early 😊. My little diva loves her bandana visor hat I just made her, and of course, she said, that she needs a skirt to go with the hat. I thought about how I could make a skirt to go with the bandana visor and came up with the pattern to sew a tie skirt!

You can use a 100% cotton fabric to sew the skirt or any apparel fabric would work as well. I highly recommend buying fabric at Joann.com, since where I get fabric for my projects. You will find a wide array of great quality fabric, that is also affordably priced. Let’s follow a step-by-step tutorial on how to sew a tie skirt!

So, the size of the skirt sewing pattern is good for 3-5 years olds. If you want to sew the skirt for a 1-2-year-old child you can use nine tie pieces.

Always wash and dry fabric ahead of time to pre-shrink it.

Step 1. First, cut out 12 tie pattern pieces,  four each out of different fabric prints.

Step 2. Overlock with a zig-zag stitch all the edges of tie pieces, because it prevents the fabric from fraying. Then, arrange the prints in the order you want to sew them together.

Step 3. Next, align tie pieces one by one, right side together, and stitch the edges. Stitch the last piece with the first, then open all seams and iron them flat.

Step 4. Now, create a waistband at the top of the skirt. Fold the fabric 1.5” over, iron it down and then pin.

Step 5. Mark a 2” wide opening for the elastic to come in and out. Fold the edge ¼” under and stitch around leaving an opening for elastic.

Step 6. Attach a safety pin to the front end of the elastic. Push the elastic all the way through the casing until it comes out the other side.

Step 7. Overlap the elastic ends by an inch and sew them together. Sew two zigzag lines to make sure it is nice and secure. Make sure the elastic isn’t twisted anywhere inside the casing before sewing! Sew the waistband closed.
